Here are my notes from the 2008 Charleston Conference. They are extremely sketchy and I'll try to embellish because there were several elements in these meetings that are directly relevant to the PASCAL crisis.

Rick Moul

Out of the box

Set up - Ithaka Report

Purdue - Embed on the research process Me - pascal role as clearinghouse for acad libraries? Library science as a multidisciplinary value add Various programs/grants Purdue imls grant Coheres @ data curation... Purdue - research support discussion Strategic university level approach

Info specialist concept The sketchiness of the notes on Purdue speaker belies the fact that he had some really great ways to conceptualize what we are as an ERP.

Info commons e.g. Penn

Furman Digicenter Luna/slides... Needed to use product as something beyond slide projector. Multidisciplinary approach - Nola class example.

Thursday notes

Ebook, core collections in Colorado

Example of a multi library environment Metrics - session, page view, pages copied/printing Analysis of top 500 titles

Ebrary use vs. Print use W&M comparison to Ybp top list - basically use doesn't overlap that much

Bottom line - doesn't seem to me that ebools compete in terms of content with print - different content/purposes.

Content/information is going digital - different ontology... Paradigm shift issues . Parrallels the form revolution tied to printing press.

New order is user driven...

Approval plans won't work for etexts...

Big deals? Packages etc.subsciption, paygo, etc.

CARLI Grant-based collection management aasessmemt

Various points 500k students - 30k staff; dcb; 1 million transactions; lots of digital... Last copy program; storage; UI holds 24 hour deliver.. 140k shipping...

Collection grants... Top 5 lenders - 25%

Analysis:

Variety of data elements.., preliminary data: Nov 2008 huge volume of data

Various levels for phase SASS

Copies, LC class, Trade pulblshers v academic press etc Print v ebook

Breakdown of data Historical material 1.3 million domestic titles focus 5 years Local v consortial use 1.6 v 2 million

An issue bol counts libqual for carli - branding web 2.0; central purchasing etc. Amazon links; public library interaction etc. Direct consortial borrowing

Lots of cool stuff.

Survey libraries based on data Data analysis

Ohiolink/carli big consortial analysis

Noncircs - what are measures that are meaningful?

Lynn Wiley

Just in case... How do you do it ok an enterprise approach. Culture shift.

Adversity generates innovation ..,

Sharing ebooks... Need to work around

Communty Goals Access - financial aid v open access to courses, US, decemtralized

Research output - ILL v opensource of low cost access. Authors don't see low cost as issue - basically it's about readership I'm the field.

Presevation of scholarship - retain v license. Econmocally sustainable preservation - What are the incentives at institutional level?

It's about frameworks... Decentralization impedes ...

Friday 2020 Reseach library in Gooogle world Scenario: Google rules -what then

Penn? Cteation of local content balanced with cconsumption 2010

Peer reviewsocialized thru board Widening ofblibrarianship Authorship andbscholarly communication changes to social networking Imtegratiom using IT

Copyright - OA wins

Print repaced by datasets

---? Libraries - more about data... Talent is more technical and multidisciplimary

Facilitation, localization, data curation.

---eaton

Google settlement -

Book Is a core, active readership/mashups... Less linear reading, more granularity-need to retrain students & teachers

We've been doing a lot

Network level - worldcat/google

Regional level roles - new roles to intermediation

Local/campus level - infrastucture & training

Network level - OCLC/google replacing local catalog/ILL

1- more at network level 2- mediation at local level 3-google not the be all

ScholRly communi ation lunch

Lost most of notes... Basically the key point is this is the framework fir library services.

Changing research culture and technology

Libraries need to see it as a service. Cradle to grave...

Copyright, ip, author's rights central elements...

Look at Janus website

Florida - FCLA - governing councils etc Fla revenue issues - good examples... Always in recosion mode - stimulatescooperation

Bottom line, lots of mandates/planning for cooperation
