PASCAL Electronic Resouces - EBSCO Update Print E-mail

PASCAL Electronic Resouces  EBSCO Update

Last Updated, January 30, 2008

This update provides information for implementing the initial license with EBSCO. We'll be making frequent updates, for both the EBSCO license and for additional publishers as the program grows.

1. Databases - Here is the complete listing of EBSCO databases licensed through PASCAL. Information on scope and coverage will be posted shortly.

Academic Search Premier
Business Source Premier
MLA Bibliography
CINAHL*
MEDLINE*
ERIC*
Health Source Nursing Academic Edition
Psychology and Behavioral Sciences Collection
Computer Source
MAS Ultra
Primary Search
Military and Government Collection
*Will be available to all DISCUS users

2. Access Information - As of 1/18/05, EBSCO is developing access to the Collegiate DISCUS databases, starting with existing EBSCO customers. The databases listed above will be added to customer profiles. EBSCO will be developing customer profiles for libraries that did not previously subscribe to an EBSC0 product. This work should be finished by the end of the week (January 21).

There will be a MASTER PASCAL profile which will control branding of Collegiate DISCUS products, although linking between Collegiate DISCUS and institutionally purchased EBSCO databases should be transparent.

EBSCO will be providing durable URLs for each database. These links will be available from this site in the near future. Libraries may insert these links into their A-Z lists, or other locations, so long as the source of the database is acknowledged. We will provide a .gif file and a link to the collegiate DISCUS homepage or faq for this purpose.

Remote access - EBSCO can support remote access through two forms.

  • Proxy access - libraries will be able to provide access through existing proxy servers using the durable URLs.
  • User IDs EBSCO will supply institutional user ID/PW combinations. ; PASCAL will implement this at some point in the near future.

3. Technical Support - The License allows direct contact between member libraries and EBSCO for support. Technical problems and questions should be reported to EBSCO, but PASCAL should be copied on correspondence, so that we can supply any necessary follow- up. Here is the EBSCO Technical Support information:

EBSCOhost Technical Support is available to answer your questions regarding service/access issues:

a complete menu of available resources. Institutions may also link to these
as persistent URL's from their library web page. The "Release Information"
tab is a current list of announcements regarding upcoming EBSCOhost software
enhancements.

The following tutorials are available to assist users with navigating
specific databases:

2. Training Information - The license provides for several rounds of training. PASCAL aims to coordinate training in several phases, using both face-to-face training and Web casting as the method for delivery. The first round of training will be conducted in four locations during the week of January 24. For information on these training sessions, including time, location and sign up information, please go to this link: EBSCO Training for PASCAL .

3. Branding - Promotion of Collegiate DISCUS is critical to our long-term success! In order to promote Collegiate DISCUS, as well as to give credit to the General Assembly for funding its resources, PASCAL plans to maintain control over branding within the databases. PASCAL will place logos within the databases, and we expect that member libraries will be enthusiastic about publicizing the source of the resources. Use the Collegiate DISCUS logo on your linking pages, and make a prominent link to the Collegiate DISCUS web site on your web site.

Also, EBSCO provides branding opportunities within their interface. PASCAL branding policies and options for EBSCO may be found here: PASCAL Branding and Logos.

4. Credits for Existing Subscriptions - EBSCO's policy on Credits (as of 9/26/05)

“There are many sites throughout PASCAL that during the past few years had purchased EBSCOhost databases which were subsequently acquired by PASCAL last Fall. EBSCO recognizes that libraries would like to receive credit for the unused portion of their database subscriptions. These “credit” amounts may be used toward the purchase of new products or the renewal of other EBSCO databases in their profile. For example, a library that purchasesPsycINFO may use their “credit” toward renewal of that product for the January 2006 subscription, or other products that are not coordinated by PASCAL but ordered direct through EBSCO. Another scenario would be for institutions that participate in the Carolina Consortium, which is coordinated by UNC-Greensboro. PASCAL libraries may also use their “credit” toward purchases through the Carolina Consortium. This is a question that has come up quite a bit recently as the Carolina Consortium moves closer to their first round of group acquisitions. There is not a definitivetimeline for resolution of your “credits”, however, our estimate is that most libraries would like to move this forward during your current fiscal year.

We have calculated the prorated “credits” for each institution. If a library has not already been contacted by our sales reps, Lainie Brown or Jim Tucker, they can expect a call in the near future. Also, these “credits” are not being tracked by the EBSCO office in Birmingham, as they are being manually addressed byLainie Brown in our EBSCO Publishing office. Therefore, we ask that you please not contact our accounting department in Birmingham regarding these transactions, as they will not have any information regarding this issue. ”We look forward to working with you through this situation.

5. PASCAL EBSCO Buyers' Club -

  • MLA & CINAHL - Libraries subscribing to CINAHL and MLA Bibliography will not need to renew their subscriptions for 2005-2006. (Libraries subscribing to these products through other vendors may also cancel their subscriptions for 2005-2006.
  • APA databases - APA databases (psycINFO and PsycArticles) licensed through the PASCAL buyers' club are not included in the Collegiate DISCUS package, although EBSCO has extended the period for renewals. Pricing and renewal information will be sent out within the next week.
